VĂN TẾ THẬP LOẠI CHÚNG SINH
A SALVATION ORATION FOR
WANDERING SOULS OF MANY SORTS

* thơ Việt: tiền bối Nguyễn Du (184 câu)
* văn Anh: hậu sinh Lê Vương Ly (Bình Dương)

1. Tiết tháng Bảy mưa dầm sùi sụt,
Toát hơi may lạnh buốt xương khô,
Não người thay buổi chiều thu,
Ngàn lau nhuốm bạc, lá ngô rụng vàng.

In lunar July it is raining continually,
Releasing the frozen air to the bone.
What a heart-rending autumn evening it is!
Forests of reeds are turning grey and maize leaves are shedding
yellow.

5. Đường bạch dương bóng chiều man mác,
Ngọn đƣờng lê lác đác sương sa,
Lòng nào là chẳng thiết tha,
Cõi dương còn thế nữa là cõi âm.

The way of abeles is stretching with the evening shadow,
The street of pear trees is scattered with the ground fog on the
top,
What a moving sight touching people’s heart!                                            2

The land of the living is so gloomy, let alone the world of the
dead.

Trong trường dạ tối tăm trời đất,
10. Có khôn thiêng phảng phất u minh,
Thương thay thập loại chúng sinh,
Hồn đơn phách chiếc lênh đênh quê người.

It is so dark in the long night,
There are holy souls hovering about,
How piteous for dozens of forsaken spirits!
Being lone, adrift in the foreign land.

Hương khói đã không nơi nương tựa,
Hồn mồ côi lần lữa đêm đen,
15. Còn chi ai quí ai hèn,
Còn chi mà nói ai hiền ai ngu?

No where is for incense-smoke to be burnt,
Lone souls linger in the dark night,
There is nothing left to say who is rich or poor,
As well as who is talented or ignorant, isn’t there?

Tiết đầu thu lập đàn giải thoát
Nước tĩnh bình rưới hạt dương chi
Muôn nhờ đức Phật từ bi,
20. Giải oan, cứu khổ, hồn về Tây phương.

It’s at the beginning of autumn to set up the altar for getting
out of sufferings,
Water in the decanter is sprinkled over the spirits of the dead,
Wishing a favour of the compassionate Buddha,
Who can exonerate, saving wandering souls from misfortune for
them to go to the Western Paradise.

Cũng có kẻ tính đường kiêu hãnh,
Chí những lăm cướp gánh non sông,
Nói chi những buổi tranh hùng
Tưởng khi thế khuất vận cùng mà đau.

There were people full of conceit,
With the ambition to be seated on the throne,
Without considering the fights for supremacy,
Paid the heavy price due to bad luck in the end.

25. Bỗng phút đâu mưa sa ngói lở
Khôn đem mình làm đứa sất phu,
Lớn sang giàu nặng oán thù,
Máu tươi lai láng, xương khô rã rời.

All of a sudden, a scene of fierce fighting took place,
They died in battle as other ordinary combatants in the troop.
Though rich and influential, they had enmity,
Having blood flowing profusely and dry bones torn in pieces.

Đoàn vô tự lạc loài nheo nhóc,
30. Quỷ không đầu than khóc đêm mưa
Cho hay thành bại là cơ
Mà cô hồn biết bao giờ cho tan!

Groups of those without children and relations wandering
without home,
Leaderless devils cried in the rainy night
It is obvious that human success or defeat is their karma
Until when can forsaken spirits be reincarnated?

Những cậy mình cung quế Hằng Nga,
35. Một phen thay đổi sơn hà,
Mảnh thân chiếc lá biết là về đâu?

There were persons living in the bead curtains,
Relying themselves on their beauty,
Once the nation changed,
Where would they drift to?

Trên lầu cao dưới cầu nước chảy
Phận đã đành trâm gãy bình rơi,
Khi sao đông đúc vui cười,
40. Mà khi nhắm mắt không ngƣời nhặt xương.

On the high castle with the bridge water flowing under
Destiny ends as the hairpin snaps and the vase falls,
There were, when alive,  many crowds gathering, smiling and
laughing together,
Yet, no one came visiting when passing on.

Đau đớn nhẽ không huơng không khói,
Luống ngẩn ngơ dòng suối rừng sim.
Thương thay chân yếu tay mềm
Càng năm càng héo, một đêm một rầu.

It’s a grief for those dead without incense-smoke,
Whose souls remained forlorn in the stream and the myrtle
forest all the time.
What a pity for the fair sex
Withering by each year and sorrowful by each night.

45. Kìa những kẻ mũ cao áo rộng,
Ngọn bút son thác sống ở tay,
Kinh luân găm một túi đầy,
Đã đêm Quản Cát lại ngày Y Chu (1).

Over there were those in high hats and wide gowns,
Whose pens of power in hand could determine who was dead
or alive,                                                                                        6

Who had lots of administration skills,
As ingenious as Quan Cat and Y Chu in the ancient times.

50. Trăm loài ma mồ nấm chung quanh,
Nghìn vàng khôn đổi được mình
Lầu ca, viện hát, tan tành còn đâu?

Getting so much prosperity, getting so much enmity,
They also died, lying among hundreds of graves around,
Lots of gold couldn’t get a life to live

55. Cô hồn thất thểu dọc ngang,
Nặng oan khôn nhẽ tìm đường hoá sinh.

No relatives were nearby to help

Costing over hundreds of deaths to achieve a feat for one.

Khi thất thế tên rơi đạn lạc,
Bãi sa trường thịt nát máu rơi,
Bơ vơ góc bể chân trời,
Nắm xương vô chủ biết vùi nơi nao?

When being defeated by a stray arrow or bullet,
The battle field was full of bloody bodies,
Alone in the distant lands,
Where were unnamed bones buried?

65. Trời thăm thẳm mưa gào gió thét,
Khí âm huyền mờ mịt trước sau,
Ngàn mây nội cỏ rầu rầu,
Nào đâu điếu tế, nào đâu chưng thường?

It is so dark as the screaming rain and the shouting wind arise,
The air of the dead world is hazy in front and behind,
Masses of clouds in the sky and grass in the meadows turn
highly gloomy,

Who makes offerings in remembrance of the dead with deep
regret and who makes offerings for wandering souls out of
pity?

property.
When alive, they got great riches,
But not one cent could be brought along with when dead.

Hòm gỗ đa bó đóm đưa đêm
Ngẩn ngơ trong quãng đồng chiêm,
80. Nén hương giọt nước, biết tìm vào đâu?

Having hired mourners for the funeral, with no love out of
neighbors,
The wooden coffin was carried with a torch at night
Lonely in the harvest ricefield being so dry,
Where to find incense sticks and water cups of water?

Cũng có kẻ rắp cầu chữ quý
Dấn mình vào thành thị lân la,
Mấy thu lìa cửa lìa nhà,
Văn chương đã chắc đâu mà trí thân?

There were also persons intending to attain the highest
honours
Launching out into the city life,
